If you had to pick one single factor that determines whether a farm thrives or fails, whether the food it produces is nutritious or hollow, whether the land is healing or dying, it would be the soil.
This is the foundation of everything we do at Permanido, and the reason we chose regenerative farming over conventional methods.
What Is Soil Health, Actually?
Healthy soil is not just dirt. It is a living ecosystem: a teaspoon of good garden soil contains more microorganisms than there are people on Earth. Bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, earthworms, all working together to break down organic matter, cycle nutrients, and create the conditions in which plants can grow.
When you damage this ecosystem through tillage, synthetic chemicals, or monoculture, the soil loses its ability to function. It compacts. It erodes. It stops holding water.
What We Have Learned in Five Years
When we first tested our soil in 2019, the results were not encouraging. Organic matter was low. Microbial activity was minimal. The land had been farmed conventionally for decades before we arrived.
Today, organic matter is increasing by roughly 0.3% per year, which represents millions of tons of carbon being sequestered into the ground. Water infiltration has improved dramatically. Earthworm counts have increased tenfold.
Soil is the foundation. Everything else (the food forests, the water systems, the biodiversity) is built on top of it. If the soil is healthy, everything else follows.
What You Can Do
You do not need a farm. Even a garden bed or a balcony planter benefits from regenerative thinking. Stop tilling. Add compost. Plant diverse species. Let the soil do its work. It knows what to do, if you let it.
