Guest Stories: The Family Reunion

Every family reunion has a story. Ours tend to involve too much food, not enough chairs, and at least one argument about something that happened decades ago. The Martinez family came to Permanido expecting the same. What they got was something different.

Fourteen people. Three generations. Both houses booked for a full week in October. They arrived tired, scattered, and (by their own admission) not entirely sure why they had all agreed to this.

The First Morning

Marco took them on a farm tour on day one. Not a polite guided walkabout, but a real one. Hands in the compost. Kids pulling weeds. Grandchildren collecting eggs. The kind of thing that takes everyone out of their comfort zone in the best possible way.

By the end of the morning, the family had a shared experience. Something that belonged only to them. Not a photograph, but an actual memory, earned through doing something together.

My grandmother, who is 78 and has not gardened in thirty years, planted a lemon tree. She cried. We all did, a little. - Rosa Martinez

The Week Unfolded

They cooked together. They ate together: long, slow dinners on the terrace with regional wine and bread baked that morning. The teenagers, who had arrived glued to their phones, spent entire afternoons exploring the farm on foot.

By the end of the week, Rosa told us something we hear more often than you might expect: "This is the first family trip where everyone actually enjoyed themselves."

Why It Works

We think it has something to do with the pace. Sicily moves slowly. The farm moves slower still. When you are surrounded by that rhythm, when there is no agenda except the land and the food and each other, the walls come down. Conversations happen that would never happen in a hotel lobby.

Experience It Yourself
